Editions

Each image is offered in two editions. A limited edition is printed in a small, numbered run, and each print in it is signed. An open edition is made to order and carries no number. It stays available, and it is printed each time it is ordered.

The open editions are sold through the print shop. Limited editions may be produced and delivered differently, and for now they are arranged by inquiry.

The Lab

A photograph made from inside the railroad deserves a print made with the same care. The open editions are made by Bay Photo Lab, a professional lab in Scotts Valley, California, that has printed for working photographers since 1976.

Fine art prints are made on a high-resolution, large-format inkjet printer, with archival inks laid onto fine art paper. Each one is made to order, for one buyer.

The papers and sizes on offer will be listed in the shop.

Metal and Framing

Some images want paper. Others want metal. Bay Photo makes its MetalPrints by infusing dyes directly into specially coated aluminum, which leaves the image with a luminous surface that is waterproof and scratch-resistant.

Framing is available as well, with an optional mat, so a print can arrive already framed.

Shipping

Prints ship from the lab directly to you. Shipping options and costs are shown at checkout.

If a Print Arrives Damaged

If a print ordered through the shop arrives damaged, keep the box and everything that came in it. Photograph the print and the packaging, then write to the shop through the support link in your order confirmation or shipping email, within thirty days of delivery. A print damaged in transit is reprinted and sent again at no cost to you, or refunded if you prefer.

Caring for a Print

Light, acid, humidity and the air itself are what fade a print over the years. Hang it out of direct sun. Frame it with an acid-free mat and backing, behind glazing, so nothing acidic touches the image and the surface stays clean. Keep it out of damp rooms. Handle an unframed print by its edges, with clean, dry hands, and store it flat.

A MetalPrint asks less of you. Its surface is waterproof and resists scratches.

Questions

Who makes the prints?

The open editions are made by Bay Photo Lab, in Scotts Valley, California, which has printed for professional photographers since 1976. Limited editions may be produced differently. Ask about a particular image.

What’s the difference between a limited and an open edition?

A limited edition is a small, numbered run, and each print in it is signed. An open edition is made to order, unnumbered, and stays available. Both are archival prints.

Which papers and sizes can I order?

They will be listed in the shop when it opens. Until then, ask through the contact form and I will answer.

Who takes the order and the payment?

For open editions, the shop runs on SmugMug, which takes the order and the payment, sends the file to Bay Photo for printing, and sees the print shipped to you.

What if something is wrong with my print?

Every open-edition print is made to order. If one arrives damaged, or is not right, write to the shop within thirty days of delivery and it will be reprinted or refunded.

Can I order a size or finish that is not listed?

Ask through the contact form, and name the image.
